NCA is hard at work delivering emergency relief to flood victims in the Sindh-province of Pakistan, amongst others through our local partner Research and Development Foundation (RDF).

NCA/ACT Alliance is doing the following in Pakistan:

A total of 153,000 people are receiving assistance in Sindh province. Our relief effort consists of:

  • Clean water
  • Food parcels containing wheat flour, lentils, cooking oil, sugar, salt, tea, potatoes, onions, rice and spices
  • Hygiene parcels
  • Tents and blankets
  • Four mobile clinics
  • Kitchenware and cooking equipment
  • Mosquito nets
  • Plastic sheeting

Water and hygiene experts from NCA's emergency preparedness roster have visited the hardest-affected areas, and more are on their way. Their task is to help install water purification equipment.

A disaster

"The situation for flood victims is nothing short of disastrous," says Petter Eide, NCA country representative in Pakistan. He recently visited Sindh province where he saw the devastation with his own eyes.

"I have lots of experience. I have travelled widely and seen much need, but this is on a different level entirely. We're talking about sick people and children who are affected here. Children are being born in the middle of all of this. You can hardly believe it when you see it with your own eyes," he explained to Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.

More affected than 2010

During the great flood of 2010, a total of seven million people were affected in Sindh province alone. This year as many as nine million have been affected in the same province. Hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes. Hundreds of deaths have been recorded, and casualties are expected to rise. Large quantities of rain have caused this year's flooding.

Urgent response required

"Given the scale of this disaster, I am extremely disappointed that the media and the international community have had so little focus on Pakistan. The Pakistani people need help now," says Eide.

NCA was able to respond quickly to the flooding thanks to the efficiency of our local partner RDF.

"Thanks to our local Pakistani partner, we already are reaching out to affected communities with relief. But our contribution is not enough, the international community must act," says Eide.

NCA has received 6 million NOK (around 1 million USD) from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs towards the relief effort. We have also received funds from ICCO, our sister organisation in the Netherlands.
