Mali

We have worked in Mali since the drought in the Timbuktu region in 1984. Since then, our work has grown into a long-term rural development programme and an expanded programme for the development of civil society in northern Mali.

Mali

Mali is one of the least developed countries in Africa, but it nevertheless contributes significantly to stability in West Africa. The conflicts present elsewhere in the region follow various axes and include elements of political and economic marginalisation, the struggle for control of illegal activities, ethnicity and religious fundamentalism.

The background for the current tense situation is complex, but is in large due to a lack of political and economic monitoring of peace agreements in Mali between 1996 and 2006, combined with very difficult climatic conditions.

Norway and Norwegian Church Aid have prerequisites to play an important role in stabilisation through using their comparative advantages; presence in and expertise on northern Mali.

Our work

Norwegian Church Aid focuses on climate change adaptation projects, peace and reconciliation as well as work for women's rights. Geographically, the programme is concentrated in the regions of Kidal, Gao and Timbuktu in northern Mali.

The right to peace and security: Norwegian Church Aid is working to overcome community violence and to ensure control of small arms. We do this in part by supporting local initiatives to reconstruct the traditional peace culture. We also mobilise communities to engage in advocacy for the right to economic development and sustainable livelihoods.

Climate justice: Norwegian Church Aid works continuously to develop Disaster Risk Reduction strategies and with management systems that protect against sand dune and soil erosion. We are also developing the use of solar energy in the Timbuktu region. Norwegian Church Aid ensures that villages have access to solar energy equipment, including training in its use and maintenance.

Gender justice: Norwegian Church Aid challenges men's and women's behavior in connection with excision and early marriage. We put gender-based violence on the agenda as a structural problem, and advocate for authorities to adopt national laws that can prevent violence against women and ensure health and legal rights for victims of violence.

Coordination through the ACT Alliance

NCA is member of the International ACT Alliance. None of the local organisations in Mali are members, but in emergency situations, we work with other ACT members, such as UK-based Christian Aid.
