Emergency response in Nigeria

As of January 2018, 1.9 million people are displaced and more than 7 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in the three most affected states in Northeast Nigeria, Borno being the hardest hit state.

A major conflict line is between Boko Haram and the authorities. NCA since the beginning of 2017 in Nigeria has responded with WASH and measures to prevent Gender-based Violence (GBV), including protection of GBV victims.

NCA has been operational in Nigeria since 2017. Quality program oversight, coordination and management lies with the WASH Advisor for WASH interventions, and a GBV Advisor for GBV program interventions provides guidance and professional expertise to the GBV programme.

What we do

Response to GBV: In close cooperation with local partners and local coordination mechanisms, NCA has established Safe spaces for women and girls vulnerable to violence. These spaces offer psychological support activities, and facilitates economic and social empowerment & livelihoods including skills acquisition. NCA further facilitates adolescent girls programming, training on Clinical management of rape, and provides NFI support and dignity kits.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH): NCA provide water supply, sanitation facilities and hygiene promotion services in camps and host communities. Activities include rehabilitation and drilling of boreholes fitted with handpumps, repairing and construction of sanitation facilities which include latrine and bathing shelters, dislodging of latrines, provision  of quality and context appropriate hygiene kits to vulnerable IDP households, and mainstreaming of hygiene into GBV through menstrual hygiene management (MHM)..

Where we work

NCA works in the following local government areas (LGAs) in Borno state, Northeast Nigeria: Dickwa, Monguno, Chibock, Askira/Uba, Maiduguri, Jere and Konduga, and has the potential to expand to other locations as needs are identified and new locations are liberated and made accessible.

NCA also implements WASH programs in Benue and Cross River State in South Nigeria towards Cameroon refugees.

Who we work with

NCA is semi-operational, in that we work with partners where possible, and implement directly where partners are not available. Work is always carried out in close cooperation with community leaders to ensure community involvement and sustainability, and aims to include religious leaders in the programming. Establishing women WASH committees with support from local GBV teams is central in the WASH program.

Presently NCA works with and facilitates capacity building of the following local GBV partners:

    • Ekklesiyar Yan`uwa (EYN)
    • Jireh Doo Foundation (JDF)
    • Federation of Moslem Women Association (FOMWA)
    • Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN)

  • EYN: 930 women and girls reached with response services, and another 990 women and men reached through sensitization and awareness-raising activities
  • JDF: 460 women and girls reached through psychological support and awareness activities
