Lumbira Health Center and maternity ward officially opens amidst church celebration.
On Sunday September 3, around 4,000 people came together to celebrate 125 years of Zambezi Evangelical Church's presence in Malawi. At this celebration, NCA handed over the Lumbira Hospital, with a maternity ward, guardian shelter and three comfortable staff houses, to the church that is responsible for running the hospital.
Lumbira is a health facility under the umbrella of the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM), and Executive Director Andrew Chikopa expressed great appreciation for the way NCA is enhancing the quality of health facilities within the CHAM family.
The project, worth around NOK 3.5 million, is serving the rural and peri-urban area of Mitsidi close to Blantyre. The hospital is situated in a steep hill and comprehensive stone pitching was necessary to avoid serious run-offs during rainy season.
At the time of the official opening, five newborn babies were safely cradled on their mothers’ laps.
Statistics show that more mothers seek safe deliveries when maternity wards with skilled midwives are available and the number of deaths related to pregnancies, deliveries, infant deaths and under-five health development have shown significant improvement over the past 10 years.
Well-run maternity wards play a pivotal role in this development and NCA was proud to hand over Lumbira as one of eight health centers and maternity wards that have been constructed over the last two-three years.
The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa who officiated the opening, underlined in his address the importance of having health facilities close to where people are and that NCA has contributed significantly in the provision of health care facilities in the rural areas of Malawi.
