Man working in a field

Burkina Faso

NCA has worked in Burkina Faso since 2020, drawing on regional experience from Mali to support humanitarian and development efforts. We partner with civil society to strengthen local capacities, with key results in gender-based violence prevention, climate-resilient WASH, peacebuilding, economic development, and environmental stewardship.

The water that unites people in need

Inadequate access to water & sanitation

NCA and partners improve sanitation and hygiene by building latrines, waste bins, and water points, training water committees, and running hygiene awareness campaigns. We also distribute hygiene and sanitation kits, significantly enhancing the health and well-being of vulnerable communities and households.

Maternal mortality

NCA and partners enhance the capacity of healthcare providers and community actors in sexual and reproductive health. We equip health facilities, set up adolescent spaces, conduct maternal and neonatal death audits, train and equip village midwives, and distribute delivery kits. Through these efforts, we improve maternal health outcomes and empower communities.

Gender inequalities

NCA and its partners promote the creation of safe spaces for women and girls and implement the 'Support for Women's Organisations' approach. We also enhance the capacity of civil society actors and health staff on GBV and the clinical management of sexual violence. NCA works closely with religious and community leaders to improve the lives of women.

Inter-Community Conflict

NCA and its partners focus on participatory analysis and conflict sensitivity, identifying and strengthening inclusive local peace structures that involve community and religious leaders, youth, women, and people living with disabilities. Emphasis is also placed on consolidating social cohesion by training and supporting community actors in mediation and community dialogue.

Why

Insecurity has led to the displacement of an estimated 2.1 million people, increasing pressure on water and sanitation infrastructure and exacerbating community conflicts. At the same time, GBV is on the rise, and access to specialised services for survivors remains limited. In the health sector, access to sexual and reproductive health services remains inadequate, particularly in areas with a high-security deficit.

How

NCA together with our partner work through an integrated service approach where multiple deficits are tackled simultaneously. We build WASH infrastructure, construct and rehabilitate boreholes with human-powered pumps, extend water points in health centers, construct family and gender-based latrines, and build rubbish dumps with waste sorting. We also raise hygiene awareness, support health facilities with kits and medicines, promote safe spaces for women and girls, distribute dignity kits, and train village midwives.

Result

The PDH project has provided a holistic response to community needs. Thanks to WASH infrastructure, it has facilitated access to drinking water for more than 1,500 rights- holders and hygienic menstrual management for more than 300 girls and women. In addressing GBV, it has helped to reduce the risk of violence and facilitated the care and empowerment of 115 survivors. Support in inputs has helped alleviate the needs of health facilities in hard-to-reach areas and has contributed to safe deliveries.
