– A Part of the Success

Norwegian Church Aid has supported Haydom Lutheran Hospital for many years. “Norwegian Church Aid is very important to us and is part of this success,” says the hospital’s managing director, Paschal Mdoe.

“At Norwegian Church Aid we are very proud to have supported Haydom Lutheran Hospital for a long time,” says Berte Marie Ulveseter, Country Director for Norwegian Church Aid in Tanzania.

Norwegian Church Aid has partnered with Haydom Lutheran Hospital (HLH) in Manyara region in Tanzania since 2003. Since  2015, NCA has been primarily responsible for overseeing the Norwegian financial support to the hospital (“grant manager”).

HLH is central to the successful Safer Births Bundle of Care program, which is a collaboration between Haydom Lutheran Hospital, Norwegian researchers, Norad, Laerdal Global Health, and Tanzanian authorities.

The results of the program have gained international attention: Between 2021 and 2023, maternal deaths were reduced by 75% and newborn deaths by 40% at 30 health facilities in the five regions where the program was implemented. The findings were published in 2025 in one of the world’s most prestigious medical journals, the New England Journal of Medicine.

Support for governance

Norwegian Church Aid has helped professionalize Haydom’s board, strengthen hospital leadership, improve financial and procurement systems, enhance data security and IT implementation, and build capacity in advocacy, networking, and fundraising.

Denis Mosha is a senior program officer at Norwegian Church Aid in Tanzania and serves as the main contact between the organization’s Tanzania office and Haydom Lutheran Hospital.

“Our main role is to support the hospital’s administration and operational development, while working to make the hospital increasingly financially sustainable,” says Denis Mosha.

“Now, at least 50 percent of the hospital’s operations are funded through its own income. They run a guesthouse and a farm, among other things. They receive donor support for research, and the profits from research are used to operate the hospital,” Mosha explains.

Important

Hospital director Paschal Mdoe says Norwegian Church Aid’s role has been and continues to be of great significance.

“Norwegian Church Aid is very important to us and part of this success because the organization has worked closely with Haydom for over ten years,” says Mdoe.

“The collaboration with Norwegian Church Aid has changed the way we work today and has increased the efficiency of this hospital,” Mdoe adds.

He says the hospital will continue working with Norwegian Church Aid to ensure the positive results are maintained.

“We are confident that through this collaboration, we will continue to make a difference for people in Tanzania and around the world,” says the director.
