Cholera Response in Maiduguri, Borno State
The cholera outbreak continues to affect vulnerable families across Maiduguri, with communities facing the devastating impact of the disease.
In Dalama Community, Old Maiduguri, where 70 cases were reported today, a 90-year-old grandmother is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment at the Dalama Primary Health Care Facility.
“I pray my mother survives this outbreak. She became seriously ill last night, with severe vomiting and diarrhoea,” said Aisha, her granddaughter.
In response, NCA's Case Area Targeted Intervention (CATI) teams were rapidly deployed to the community, carrying out house to house and street to street awareness campaigns, household disinfection, and community sensitization activities to help curb further transmission.
More than 150 community members were reached with lifesaving information on cholera prevention, safe hygiene practices, water treatment, early care seeking, and infection prevention measures.
The situation remains concerning, with multiple households affected and signs of ongoing community transmission.
Across Borno State, cholera and Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) cases have now been reported in 12 LGAs and 44 wards, with a cumulative 7,850 cases recorded. To date, CATI teams have responded to 1,260 cases, chlorinated 299 water points, disinfected over 24,500 households, distributed cholera kits to 1,246 households, and reached approximately 191,000 people with critical hygiene promotion messages.
Every household reached, every water point treated, and every community sensitized represents a step toward containing the outbreak and protecting vulnerable families.
