On the 20th of April, Norad presented their development aid statistics and results for 2020. Here is what they are, and NCA's response.
In this time of uncertainty and increased poverty due to the global pandemic, development assistance is more important than ever. These are the comments given by NCA regarding Norads development aid report 2020:
- We urge all politicians to take note of the good results from Norwegian development assistance that Norad has presented today. Development aid is extremely important now that the world has been hit by a pandemic, which has led to a dramatic increase in poverty and inequality. Development aid helps to create predictability in a very turbulent and demanding time, says our Secretary General Dagfinn Høybråten.
NCA is concerned about declining investment in developing countries and that important countries such as the United Kingdom are planning major cuts in their contributions to international aid. Therefore, it is very important that Norway takes the lead and maintains development assistance in the years ahead. We encourage all Norwegian political parties to maintain 1% of GNI (gross national income) also in the years to come.
- Due to the corona crisis, the fight against poverty has been set back many decades. At a time when poverty and inequality are increasing, and where more and more people are fleeing, it is more important than ever that the world continues to work to improve the lives of the most vulnerable people, says Høybråten.
The corona pandemic has shown the importance of having actors on the ground who can reach out with help and mobilize even in the most remote areas. At the same time, organizations are experiencing that their room for manoeuvre is being reduced in more and more countries. Norwegian support for organizations, especially small organizations based in vulnerable areas, is an important lifeline for many of these now.
- Maintaining the level of aid is therefore absolutely crucial, especially in the critical phase the world is in now, says Høybråten.
Norwegian aid in 2020 amounted to a total of NOK 39.5 billion. Of these funds, 666. 6 million NOK was disbursed to NCA projects. These funds have strengthened our work with WASH, Peacebuilding, GBV, religious actors, emergency response and more.
