Norwegian Church Aid releases response to the drought in Somalia
Somalia is facing one of its most severe droughts in recent years. Norwegian Church Aid releases 5 million NOK for the drought in Somalia.
NCA gives access to water.
The failure of the autumn rains has pushed communities beyond their coping limits in Somalia. The Federal Government of Somalia declared a national drought emergency in November 2025, and the situation has worsened throughout early 2026.
More than 4.6 million people are now affected, according to the UN and the government. Many families have lost access to safe water. Food insecurity is rising, and the drought has caused significant displacement. Women and girls face a growing risk of genderbased violence. Humanitarian partners warn that without immediate support famine like conditions may emerge by mid 2026.
NCA is therefore releasing 5 million NOK to strengthen the emergency response in Puntland in Somalia. This support will allow us and our longstanding partner KAALO to scale up lifesaving assistance over the next six months.
What we will do
Water is the most urgent need. We will provide emergency water trucking to villages, sites for internally displaced people and to migration routes. We will also distribute hygiene kits and give clear public health information to help families protect themselves from disease.
We will provide multipurpose cash assistance to the most vulnerable families. We will also provide clean energy cookstoves to reduce protection risks and improve household safety.
NCA in Somalia
NCA has worked in Somalia since 1993. In partnership with local organizations, we support both long-term development and humanitarian response. Today, we are active in four regions, with key results in gender-based violence prevention, climate-resilient WASH, peacebuilding, and economic development and food security.
