When Psychosocial Support Unlocks Opportunity: Susan’s Journey in Kapuri
In Kapuri, Juba, a single step toward support can turn deep pain into renewed strength—and open the door to a new beginning.

For Susan (not her real name), life once felt overwhelming. After being abandoned by the father of her children, the burden of raising four children alone became too heavy to bear. Without income, she could not send her children to school. The stress and hopelessness slowly consumed her.
Then, through the advice of a neighbour, everything began to change.
“I am so happy first to my neighbour who directed me to the Women and Girls Friendly Space. I was living my life crying, and at some point, my mind was telling me to kill myself because I felt I was a failure to my children,” Susan recalls.
Her words reveal the silent struggles many women face—struggles that often go unseen and unheard.
A Safe Space for Healing
The Women and Girls Friendly Space (WGFS), supported by NCA South Sudan, became Susan’s turning point. Here, she found a safe environment where she could speak, heal, and rebuild her confidence.
Psychosocial support is often the first step toward recovery. For Susan, it helped her move from despair to hope—from isolation to connection.
From Healing to Empowerment
But the support didn’t stop there.
Susan joined the Kapuri Women VSLA group, a platform where women come together to save, invest, and support each other economically. Through the group, they produce and sell peanut butter (pest), generating income collectively.
Today, Susan is no longer defined by her struggles.
She is a contributor. A provider. A member of a supportive community.
Restoring Dignity and Opportunity
Susan’s journey shows a powerful truth: when psychosocial support is combined with economic empowerment, lives are transformed.
She can now:
- Contribute to her household income
- Support her children
- Rebuild her sense of dignity and self-worth
