2021 Corruption case: Tanzania
December 2021
What happened
During a financial monitoring visit to a local partner, several irregularities were observed: Insufficient documentation for several transactions and false documents.
What we did:
The management of Norwegian Church Aid's country office in Tanzania was immediately notified and the partner was suspended. An external audit firm was engaged to conduct an independent audit. The investigation concluded with falsifications for a total of NOK 234,507. The amount has been repaid to Norad.
What we learned:
The case gave us a strong reminder of the importance of regular and close follow-up of local partners. The contact and dialogue between the country office and the partner are invaluable. Financial monitoring visits are a very important part of our internal control. NCA is committed to have continued appropriate anti-corruption training - clearly defined intervention strategies, and good knowledge of the field for both staff and partners.
