Nigeria
NCA has worked in north-east Nigeria since 2017, delivering humanitarian assistance in conflict-affected areas. In close partnership with national organizations, we strengthen civil society and support vulnerable communities. Today, we are active in eight Local Government Areas, with key results in gender-based violence prevention and climate-resilient WASH.
Challenges and response
Access to life-saving services
NCA provides access to basic services in the BAY states through integrated interventions on GBV and access to water and sanitation services. NCA also facilitates safe spaces and support networks for women and girls, funds the distribution of hygiene dignity kits, and provides access to GBV case management.
Poor response to Gender Based Violence (GBV)
NCA has developed an integrated approach to GBV providing life-saving, specialised services and a survivor-centred approach to affected women and girls. Survivors of GBV are offered counselling, case management, psychosocial support (PSS), and skills development programmes.
Inadequate access to Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene (WASH)
NCA prioritises providing WASH services to vulnerable communities during emergencies. We also deliver hygiene promotion through door-to-door visits, focus group discussions, and mass awareness campaigns. We construct and rehabilitate sanitation and water infrastructure, ensuring safe use for women and girls. We also strengthen local governance and ownership of WASH facilities during and after the project.
Community resilience
NCA works to empower communities to take care of themselves and their living environment through capacity building, infrastructure sustainability, innovation, income generation, and value-adding activities. Our goal is to enhance resilience and to strengthen community structures through our
Peacebuilding and Climate and Environmental Stewardship programmes.

Why
The ongoing health and safety challenges in Pulka, Dikwa, and Monguno in the Borno State necessitate interventions to address WASH-related health risks such as cholera outbreaks and GBV. Vulnerable populations, particularly women, girls, and internally displaced people, are especially at risk, facing poor sanitation, lack of access to clean water, and exposure to GBV.
How
NCA's integrated WASH and GBV programs tackled cholera, hygiene, and sanitation issues while providing safe water supplies. Key activities included hygiene awareness campaigns, new water points, distribution of menstrual hygiene kits, and support for GBV survivors. Training for community volunteers and security actors improved their ability to address GBV.
The response initiatives created a supportive environment that helped communities in Pulka and Monguno to lead healthier, safer lives. Improved hygiene practices, along with enhanced access to safe water and sanitation services, contributed to better public health outcomes. Women and girls engaged in psychosocial support interventions, fostering healing, resilience, and empowerment. Additionally, survivors of gender-based violence received timely, survivor-centered care, assisting their recovery and long-term well- being.
