Norwegian Church Aid began its work in Russia in 1991.
Russia is the world's largest country with an area of 17 million square kilometres. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia faced a great many challenges.
The ensuing economic and social crisis led to a widening of the gap between the rich and the poor in Russia. In recent years, economic growth has improved, and the middle class is growing. Modern Russian development has however been hampered by organised crime, corruption and border conflicts.
The spread of HIV represents a considerable challenge to Russia. It is estimated that around one million people carry the virus, but that only around half of these are aware that they are infected.
More information about our Russia programme will be published soon.
