UNHCR High Commissioner Visits NCA Ethiopia's Humanitarian Response
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Dr. Barham Salih visited Norwegian Church Aid Ethiopia's humanitarian response projects in Jewi Refugee Camp on 21 June as part of his Ethiopia mission. There he witnessed how innovative economic inclusion initiatives are creating pathways of hope for refugees who fled conflict in South Sudan.
The High Commissioner was accompanied by UNHCR Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa Mr. Mamado Dian, UNHCR Ethiopia representatives, Returnees and Refugees Service Director General Ms. Teyiba Hassen, and the President and Vice President of Gambella Regional State.
The delegation was received and briefed by NCA Ethiopia Country Director Margrethe Volden, refugee rightsholders participating in the projects, and field office project staff.
During the visit, the delegation witnessed firsthand how refugee women, girls, and youth are transforming challenges into opportunities through resilience, creativity, and determination. The delegation also toured NCA's Innovation Livelihood Lab, where soap production, waste recycling, and menstrual hygiene management initiatives are strengthening dignity, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability in displacement-affected communities.
