Restoring Dignity in Gedaref Through Hygiene Kit Support
Since December 2025, Gedaref State, Sudan has continued to receive new arrivals fleeing renewed conflict in Darfur and Kordofan States.
As of April 2026, a total of 472 families (2,941 individuals) had been received, registered, and settled across five locations in Gedaref, and surrounding host communities, while some families remained at reception centres awaiting relocation.
Mona
Mona Kodi (pictured above) and her family were forced to flee North Kordofan when conflict reached their community. Like thousands of others displaced by the ongoing crisis in Sudan, they undertook a difficult journey to safety, walking long distances on foot before arriving in Gedaref State.
“We were displaced from the very first day the war reached our area,” Mona recalls. “The journey was extremely difficult, especially for families with children.”
Today, 42-year-old Mona and her family of ten are living in Wad Sanaui IDP settlement in Gedaref, relying largely on humanitarian assistance for survival. With no stable source of income, access to essential household and hygiene items remains a daily struggle.
Through the GAC-supported project (Integrated Humanitarian Response in North Darfur, White Nile and Gedaref States, Sudan 2024–2026, implemented through Development and Peace – Caritas), Mona’s family recently received a hygiene kit containing essential household supplies. According to Mona, the support has significantly eased the burden on her family.
“The containers help us carry and store water, especially because water is scarce, and the soap helps us wash our clothes. All the items are very important and support our daily life,” she explains.
Mona says the assistance has brought both relief and hope during a very difficult period.
Looking ahead, Mona hopes for continued support for displaced families and, ultimately, for peace and the opportunity to return home and rebuild their lives.
NCA's Response
Norwegian Church Aid (NCA), in coordination with the WASH Cluster and the Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) partner, the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), distributed 200 hygiene kits to newly displaced families settled in Galabat Al Gharbyah Locality (Kassab West, Kassab East, and Wad Sanaui IDP settlement). The intervention reached 923 individuals.
The hygiene kits contained essential household and hygiene items, including water containers, soap, personal hygiene materials, and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) supplies for women and girls. The support aimed to improve hygiene practices, enhance dignity, and reduce public health risks among newly displaced populations.
