NCA has been asked to head up the civil society component of the international donor conference that Norway and the UN are organizing on sexual and gender-based violence in humanitarian crises.
Together with the UN and other partners, Norway will organize an international donor conference to strengthen efforts against sexual and gender-based violence in humanitarian crises. The conference will take place in Oslo on May 23-24.
Sexualized and gender-based violence (SGBV) is a major challenge in many areas affected by humanitarian crises. The negative consequences are great and long-lasting for the survivors, their closest and the community around. Nevertheless, the humanitarian work in this field is often underfunded and characterized by little capacity.
The high level part of the conference will be held on May 24 and ministers from donor countries and developing countries, UN leaders and leaders of humanitarian organizations will be among the invited. The civil society part of the conference will be held on 23 May and will be NCA's responsibility.
"Much more needs to be done to protect and assist girls, women, boys and men who are subjected to sexual violence in humanitarian situations. The goal of the conference is to contribute to increased political awareness of the humanitarian response to SGBV and increased financial support through UN-coordinated appeals to this response. Furthermore, the conference will facilitate dialogue on how the humanitarian work should be arranged to ensure the best possible results. The conference will have a special focus on sexual violence in humanitarian crises that result from conflict.
"Protection against sexualized and gender-based violence is a high priority in Norway's new humanitarian strategy. We will promote greater respect for humanitarian law in this area. Sexual violence is not a side effect of war - it is used as a weapon in warfare and punished too rarely," said the Foreign Minister.
